What is it?

A huge region of gas, dust and young stars near the Heart Nebula in the sky. IC 1848 names the embedded cluster; W5 is another designation used for the wider region.

What can you see?

Follow the red rims around the darker interior. Hot stars energise the gas, while winds and radiation shape its surroundings. Dark dust can hide material behind it.

What does the colour tell us?

Hydrogen can emit strongly in red H-alpha light. The finished image also reflects the camera’s response and processing. A photograph shows brightness across the sky; it cannot by itself tell us the cloud’s full internal depth.

Let young stars carve a cavity

Move time forward in an illustrative cloud. Watch a young cluster push material outwards into a bright rim.
